Yorkshire puddings have a different name in the US and the Brits can't cope (2024)

Brits have been left shocked after discovering Americans call our beloved Yorkshire puddings 'popovers'.

A Yorkshire pudding is essential to a roast dinner over here, although people have been known to have it as a desert with jam or golden syrup. And it would appear it is just as popular over in the US, especially around Thanksgiving.

But instead of proudly sporting God's own country in its name, the Yanks call them 'popovers' - getting its name from the “dramatic rise” caused by the steam.

And while they are basically Yorkshire puddings, there is one subtle difference. Yorkshires are traditionally made with beef dripping whereas popovers are made with just oil.

Needless to say, this discovery has made put us lot over in Yorkshire into a spin, with most not being on board with the idea.

Ian Ashley Jillot commented: "Yorkshire puddings - end of !!!!!!!!!! N that's coming from a MAN in Yorkshire. God's own county Tha' knows.”

Martyn Brocklesby said: “A Yorkshire pudding is a Yorkshire pudding. There's no other name for them.”

Jan Thwaities wrote: “Never heard if it ,it's a yorkshire pudding, don't start changing its name.”

Ruth Boothroyd fumed: “No they don't, and if they do they're not from Yorkshire." While Kim Naeem said: "I’ve never hear such a thing. It’s Yorkshire puddings and that’s that . Americans can have their own things lol."

Michelle Ligon described how they serve them over in the US. She said: "Ah yes! In America! Used to have them for breakfast with lemon curd. Delicious!"
