UK falls for first time in NCAA Tournament: Wildcats face another SEC foe with season on line

OMAHA, Neb. —Kentucky baseball's 5-4, 10th-inning win over N.C. State on Saturday was historic in more ways than one.
Not only did it mark UK's first-ever game in theCollege World Series, but it was the Wildcats' 46th victory of the season, setting a program record for a single campaign. The 2024 Wildcats entered the CWS tied with the 2012 club for the single-season mark, as both boasted 45 wins.
But Kentucky's opponent Monday has enjoyed even more success in the victory department this season: Texas A&M has 50 wins in 2024, earning its latest in Saturday's second contest —a 3-2 triumph over Florida that ended well past midnight Sunday.

Neither the Wildcats nor Aggies have suffered a setback since the NCAA Tournament started, entering Monday's matchup with identical 6-0 records after sweeping through their respective regionals and super regionals.
The winner of Monday's game between UK and Texas A&M has Tuesday off. The loser, however, turns around and plays Tuesday in an elimination game against Florida, which beat N.C. State, 5-4, in Monday's first contest.

Émilien Pitre singled and Devin Burkes walked. But both men were left on base as A&M once again kept Kentucky off the board.

UK breaks up the no-hitter: Ryan Nicholson singled for the team's first base knock. Then Nolan McCarthy doubled. Texas A&M removed starter Ryan Prager after that, but Josh Stewart came in and immediately struck out pinch hitter Patrick Herrera to keep the Aggies' shutout intact.

The Aggies tally three more hits, but pitcher Evan Byers is able to keep the Wildcats' deficit at five. UK turned an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.

The Wildcats get some base traffic, with Ryan Waldschmidt walking and Emilien Pitre reaching on a fielder's choice, as Aggies second baseman Kaeden Kent committed a throwing error. But it was over almost as soon as it began for UK: Devin Burkes hit it right at third baseman Gavin Grahovac, who stepped on the base for Out 2 and then tossed over to first for Out 3 to complete the 5-3 double play.

The Aggies strike first: Jace LaViolette walked, followed by a double from Jackson Appel. Then Hayden Schott notched a two-run single to bring home both. After Mason Moore walked off the mound and gave way to Cameron O'Brien, Texas A&M kept trucking along. Ali Camarillo doubled to score Schott; Camarillo's base knock was aided by UK right fielder James McCoy, who misplayed the ball, not playing deep enough and seeing the ball sail over his head. One batter later, Kaeden Kent singled to push two more runs across the plate. After that, O'Brien got back-to-back strikeouts to finally end the inning.

Texas A&M owns a top-10 offenseandtop-10 defense, per numerous statistical categories. And if the Aggies get the ball in the hands of superstar reliever Evan Aschenbeck, it's game over. In 68 innings (scattered across 29 appearances in 2024), he's allowed just 14 runs (12 earned). UK will jump out to an early lead Monday, but A&M will rally, with Aschenbeck closing the door for another victory.
